Understanding Window Size Codes
Learn how to decode the 4-digit window sizing system
The 4-Digit System
Window codes use 4 digits: WWHH
- First 2 digits = Width (feet + inches)
- Last 2 digits = Height (feet + inches)
Example: 2844
28 = 2 feet, 8 inches wide (32")
44 = 4 feet, 4 inches tall (52")
So 2844 = 32" × 52" window
Important Note
Actual window dimensions are typically ½" smaller than the code to allow installation clearance.
Always verify with manufacturer specs!
How to Measure Windows Like a Pro
Follow these steps for accurate measurements every time
Measure Width
Measure inside jamb to inside jamb at three points:
- Top of window opening
- Middle of window opening
- Bottom of window opening
Record the SMALLEST measurement
Measure Height
Measure from sill to head jamb at three points:
- Left side
- Center
- Right side
Record the SMALLEST measurement
Check Square
Measure diagonally from opposite corners. If measurements differ by more than ¼", the opening isn't square.
Non-square openings may need custom windows.
- Including trim in measurements
- Measuring only one location
- Not checking if window opening is square
- Forgetting to account for house settling
