Healthcare Hero Spotlight: Sunny Goodyear
CAMP HILL, Pa. (June 9, 2020) – West Shore Home is proud to announce that Sunny Goodyear will be the recipient of a brand new shower from West Shore Home! Sunny was selected during West Shore Home’s Healthcare Heroes event. This event recognized healthcare professionals and first responders who have worked tirelessly to keep their communities healthy and safe.
Sunny began her journey right here in Central PA at Holy Spirit Hospital when she was 13-years-old. She spent her time with the Director of the Education Department. She spent her time typing up nursing policies and procedures. After this experience, she knew that nursing was exactly what she wanted to do.
“What an exciting career,” Sunny said. “IV’s, wound care, ventilators, chest tubes. I could not wait to see what it was all about.”
After graduating from Harrisburg Area Community College (HACC), she spent 20 years working as a flex nurse in the intensive care unit while she also raised her four children. In 2016, Sunny returned to school to complete her bachelor’s degree in nursing. In 2018, she took a full time position with Geisinger Holy Spirit as their Injury Prevention and Outreach Coordinator. In addition, Sunny returned to HACC this year as a part-time nursing and clinical instructor.
“I provide education to community members, schools, churches and EMS regarding violence prevention, safe driving for teens and mature drivers, fall prevention and pedestrian safety.”
Since the pandemic began, all of Sunny’s outreach has been cancelled and she has been called back in to serve in the COVID and Surgical Intensive Care Units. This also meant that all of her classes at HACC had to move online. She had to juggle working multiple shifts while also collecting and sharing her course material digitally with her students.
In the midst of all of this, three of Sunny’s children had birthdays and two of them graduated. They had planned a celebratory trip to Disney World but the trip had to be put on hold for the time being.
“These past three months have been excruciating. We have lost so much. But we all have so much to be thankful for and need to remember to count our blessings.”
Sunny is excited to see their hallway bathroom, lovingly deemed the “kid’s bathroom”, turned into a beautiful oasis. This bathroom has been lived in for years and used for everything from washing baseball caps to taking bubble baths. West Shore Home is proud to provide Sunny with a hassle-free remodeling experience to replacing their tub with a beautiful new shower.
“As we transition the kid’s bedrooms to guest rooms for family and friends, I will finally have a modern bathroom that I will be proud to show off!”
Sunny wants to thank the community for the outpouring of support during this most difficult time. She would like to remind everyone to continue to wear masks in public and wash their hands so they can stay healthy.
